Did you know that French toast isn’t actually French? While similar dishes have appeared in various cuisines for centuries, the earliest known English use of the term “French Toast” dates back to 1660. The dish was likely named for its European origin or simply because it was a “French style” of preparing bread. No matter its true origin, it has become a beloved breakfast staple around the world!
Make it Easier (Shortcuts):
- Overnight Prep: Assemble the French toast (steps 1-6) the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, simply preheat your oven and bake! This makes for an incredibly quick and easy morning.
- Pre-cut Bread: Many grocery stores sell pre-cut bread for things like croutons or stuffing. If available, this can save you a few minutes of tearing.
Add More Flavor (Enhancements):
- Vanilla Extract: Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the egg and milk mixture for a warmer, richer flavor.
- Nutmeg: Include a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (about ⅛ teaspoon) along with the cinnamon in the egg mixture for a more complex spice profile.
- Orange or Lemon Zest: A teaspoon of finely grated orange or lemon zest in the egg mixture can add a bright, fresh note that cuts through the richness.
Serving Suggestions & Drink Pairings:
- Serve warm with a dusting of powdered sugar, a drizzle of maple syrup, and fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries).
- For a heartier meal, pair with crispy bacon or sausage links.
- Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Recipe Variations:
- Fruit-Filled: Before baking, scatter 1 cup of fresh or frozen berries (no need to thaw) or sliced peaches over the bread and egg mixture for a fruity twist.
- Nutty Crunch: Add ½ cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the brown sugar topping mixture for added texture and nutty flavor.
- Chocolate Swirl: Drizzle melted chocolate or sprinkle chocolate chips over the French toast just before baking for a decadent treat.
Baked French Toast
Ingredients
- ½ loaf day-old sturdy bread approx. 250-300g or 9-10 oz
- 5 large eggs approx. 250ml or 1 cup
- 1 ½ cups 360ml milk
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt approx. ⅛ teaspoon
- 4 Tablespoons 56g unsalted butter, melted
- 3 Tablespoons 45g light brown sugar, packed
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter a 9×9 inch (23×23 cm) square casserole pan.
- Tear ½ loaf of bread into bite-sized pieces (about 1-inch chunks). Distribute the bread pieces evenly in the prepared casserole pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the 5 large eggs, 1 ½ cups milk, ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until well combined and frothy.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread pieces in the casserole pan. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to soak.
- While the bread soaks, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Stir in the 3 tablespoons of packed light brown sugar and ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon until thoroughly combined.
- Drizzle the melted butter and brown sugar mixture evenly over the soaked bread in the casserole pan.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown, puffed, and the center is set.
- Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
